This is one of the most annoying and often times debilitating and limiting set of symptoms we see. Fortunately, it is also one of the challenges that responds best to our RCR therapy.

What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica Pain is a set of symptoms namely pain, caused by compression of the sciatic nerve which is the longest nerve in the body. The sciatic nerve runs from the lumbar sacral region in the lower back and extends through the buttocks into the thighs and terminates just above the lateral malleolus (ankle bone). Its’ anatomy gives insights to the range of symptoms: low back pain, buttocks pain, pain in the thigh and side of the leg. You may feel tingling, numbness, pins and needles feeling and difficulty controlling the leg. Because the sciatic nerve ennervates the leg, chronic compression of the nerve, may cause atrophy of the leg muscles.

What Causes Sciatica?

Sciatica is caused by compression of the sciatic nerve either by disc involvement or involuntary muscle spasm specifically of the piriformis muscle which allows the leg to rotate laterally. Injections may also tighten the fascia and compress the nerve. Pregnancy may also cause sciatica as the weight of the fetus pressures the nerve during sitting. Disc involvement includes herniation or stenosis which compress the nerve. It is estimated the sciatic nere runs through, above or below the piriformis in about 40 % or more of the population. When the piriformis contracts, it places pressure on the sciatic nerve. There may be other causes, nut these are most common.

3) possible use of therapeutic grade topical applications to relive pain and facilitate healing

4) gently and non-invasively resetting the nerve system to quiet the pain. This is a vital aspect of successful therapy as it breaks the pain pattern

5) education on how to prevent sciatica in the future.
